Looking beyond the standard lipid panel
Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides remain important parts of cardiovascular risk assessment. But cholesterol travels through the bloodstream within particles, and additional measurements can sometimes provide information that is not apparent from cholesterol concentration alone.
ApoB estimates the number of atherogenic particles capable of contributing to plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.
Lp(a) is largely inherited. Measuring it can reveal a source of risk that may not appear on a routine cholesterol panel.
Triglycerides, glucose regulation, insulin resistance, and other metabolic factors provide additional cardiovascular context.
